How to Properly Use an Emergency Jump Starter?

Feb 04, 2026

An emergency jump starter is a convenient device that helps start a vehicle when the car battery is dead. Proper use and maintenance are crucial.

Before using an emergency jump starter, some preparation is necessary. Ensure the jump starter is fully charged; check the power indicator light to determine the charge level. Carefully inspect the positive and negative terminals of the car battery; generally, red is positive and black is negative. Clean any dust, oxidation, or other impurities from the battery terminals to ensure a good connection.

When connecting the emergency jump starter, strictly follow the correct sequence. First, attach the red clamp to the positive terminal of the car battery, then attach the black clamp to the negative terminal. Ensure the clamps are securely attached to prevent loose connections. After connecting, turn on the jump starter and wait a few seconds for it to establish a stable connection with the car battery. Then, try starting the car. If it doesn't start on the first try, do not attempt multiple starts consecutively; wait 1-2 minutes before trying again to avoid damaging the jump starter and the car battery.

After successful starting, turn off the jump starter switch first, then remove the clamps in the reverse order of connection, i.e., remove the black clamp first, then the red clamp.

Maintenance after use is also important. After each use, recharge the jump starter promptly. Use the original charger whenever possible to avoid damaging the power supply with a low-quality charger. When charging, place it in a dry, well-ventilated environment, away from flammable and explosive materials.

Regularly inspect the jump starter for any damage or deformation. If the casing is cracked, stop using it immediately to prevent safety hazards. Every 3-6 months, perform a deep discharge and recharge cycle to activate the battery and extend its lifespan.

Furthermore, pay attention to the storage environment of the jump starter. Store it in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight and humid environments. Excessive heat or cold will affect the battery's performance and lifespan.
